Winter Quest 2020: A Self-Supported Himalayan Mountaineering Expedition in Nepal
Intiaz Mahmud’s 2020 winter expedition in Nepal with The Quest: Himalayan photographs, expedition preparations and the original plan to climb Chulu Far-East.

The team and the idea
In 2020, I joined a winter mountaineering expedition. These photographs bring together the equipment, the people and the mountain landscape from that journey.
With The Quest, our team included Salehin Arshady, Tahmid Hossain Rafid, Samiur Rahman and me. The Daily Star’s February 2020 preview described it as Bangladesh’s first winter expedition.

The plan for the mountain
Our objective was Nepal’s Chulu Far-East (6,059 m). The month-long plan ran through Kathmandu, Besisahar and Humde for acclimatisation. Beyond Humde, we intended to carry our own supplies and climb without support, with camps around 4,800 and 5,500 m. Deep snow, avalanche risk and severe cold shaped the preparations.

A story to return to
This is the beginning of my account. I will add more stories and details from the expedition here. The report above records our intentions before the climb; it does not establish the final route, camp heights or summit outcome.
