Expedition Shurma-Sundarban: A Planned Kayak Expedition in Bangladesh
A planned 700 km solo kayak expedition in Bangladesh, from Sunamganj to the Sundarbans. Partner with Intiaz Mahmud to tell stories of rivers and rural communities.

From river country to the mangrove coast
I’m Intiaz Mahmud. After completing the 48-day Teesta–Teknaf solo kayak expedition in December 2025, I’m preparing for another line across Bangladesh: from the wetlands of the north-east to the mangrove coast of the south-west.
Expedition Shurma–Sundarban will start at Sunamganj on the Surma River, travel through river systems, floodplains and coastal waters, and continue along the Sundarbans to Dubla’r Char. I’m inviting partners to help make that journey possible and build original stories around the places and people along the route.
These are planning estimates, not completed results. The schedule and final route will be confirmed as preparation develops.

Why join the journey?
One continuous route connects haor country, river towns, chars, fishing communities and the Sundarbans. Along the way are stories of boatmen, traders, families and young people whose lives are shaped by water. The expedition offers a way to document those lives and draw attention to the beauty, changing conditions and care of Bangladesh’s rivers.
A partner can participate in the daily routine: the equipment used, the connections maintained, the products carried and the stories shared during and after the journey. The plan creates a month-long sequence of encounters and content opportunities.
Telecommunications
Field check-ins, navigation, uploads and support-team coordination can show the practical role of connectivity in rural, riverine and coastal settings. Emergency or satellite-enabled services could be included where relevant and available. Community stories can explore what reliable communication means in daily life.
Mobile financial services
Markets, ferry points and small towns offer opportunities to document merchant payments, small businesses and local livelihoods wherever digital payment is available. Partners can help develop stories and awareness activities around access, convenience and safe transactions.
Food, hydration and everyday essentials
FMCG partners can integrate relevant products into expedition routines, from food and hydration to hygiene and personal care. Selected route stops could support retailer engagement, sampling, community activities or river-care initiatives, subject to an agreed plan.
Stories we can build together
- Banglar Nodi: short, 2–3 minute films about river communities, culture, livelihoods and changing landscapes.
- Stronger People: portraits of fishermen, boatmen, char communities and coastal families living with changing weather and water.
- Connected from the River: field updates, calls and uploads that show how the expedition stays in touch with its support team and audience.
- Into the Tiger’s Den: the closing Sundarbans chapter, following the journey into the mangroves and towards Dubla’r Char.
Possible outputs include daily social updates, field notes, photographs, short-form video, branded story films and press-ready material. A short documentary, exhibition, digital feature or recap campaign could extend the partnership after the expedition. Content scope and delivery commitments will be agreed with each partner.
